Field Trip

Field Trip

Join us for a bus tour around Burrard Inlet of two flagship Nature-based Coastal Solution & Restoration projects:
(1) Maplewood Flats and
(2) New Brighton Park

The Maplewood Flats Conservation Area is located in North Vancouver (operated by Environment Canada and Wild Bird Trust). The VFPA Project there has restored an area that was dredged in the 1940s to support a gravel extraction business and was later used as a log storage area. Other ongoing NBCS work at this location will be discussed.

The New Brighton Park Shoreline Habitat Restoration Project is a Green Shores certified Gold project in east Vancouver in a park operated by the City of Vancouver. Completed in 2018, the Project converted a disused recreational area into marine habitat, which has helped to address the high mortality of juvenile chinook and chum salmon migrating through Burrard Inlet.

The tour will be facilitated by those who have been involved in the projects.

We have arranged for bus transportation to take attendees between all locations. The total riding time is about 45 minutes (its about 15 minutes between locations). The bus will be at capacity. We would prefer that all attendees take the bus, however, if you are unable to, please let me know. There are maps linked below in the Detailed Itinerary so that you can find us. You should have received an email on Oct 4 with this same information.

Maplewood Flats and New Brighton Park have public restrooms.

The weather looks to be typical PNW autumn conditions (rain; 10-16 C), so please arrive prepared for rain and for walking in wet/muddy conditions – rubber boots, raincoat / umbrella are recommended. The field trip will go on, rain or shine.

PROGRAM DETAILS

  • Please confirm the details of the Program are correct for your presentation:
    • If we don’t hear from you, we will assume the information provided in this program is accurate and complete.
    • Please check the Presenters column of the Program. If you have a co-presenter and they are not listed, please provide their name and email to us immediately so we can ensure they have registered.
    • If you are organizing a workshop session, please check all the presenter names are listed in the Presenters column of the Program. If you would like to add more names, or reorder the presenter names to match the order of speakers, please email us.
  • If you are listed as a Moderator in the Moderator column, thank you for previously volunteering! Please stand by for email instructions about this role. If you no longer wish to be a moderator please let us know.
  • The style of this event is a single session (not multiple concurrent) with all attendees watching the same presentation. We feel this allows for more interaction and eliminates stressful running between rooms. Thus we’ve built in some ‘stretch breaks’ to allow for bio breaks without missing the excitement! That said, we have packed a lot of great content into this event, so we will need to keep to the schedule.
  • We encourage you to reach out to the other presenters in your session to coordinate content, if appropriate. For example, in our Regulatory Challenges workshop, we’ll just present a summary of different permits that might be required for a project in the first talk, rather than repeating it in each presentation.
  • A document of all speakers and abstracts will be posted to the CZC-Pacific Workshop webpage by September 25.

REGISTRATION

  • As you may have seen, the workshop’s registration is sold out (at 96 attendees) and we have started a waiting list. We are looking into options to move to a larger room (to fit up to 120) – TBD whether that will work out. Thus we need your complete presenter list to ensure they can all attend.

PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

  • Format: Feel free to create your presentation using PDF or PPT slides.
  • Presentation Length: Most presentations within ‘Sessions’ are 12 minutes of presentation + 3 minutes of questions. There are a few ‘Rapid’ style talks that are 3 min + 2 min of questions (you know who you are). The Workshop sessions are all different lengths, as indicated in the schedule. Workshop session organizers – you only have that time slot indicated for all of your content, please plan accordingly.
  • Presentation Uploads: You’ll see in the schedule that registration does not open until the morning of the first day of presentations. All presenters for Sessions and Workshops, on either day, should upload their talks between 7:15-8:15 am Wednesday. If this is impossible, please let us know. Bonus – you may also email your presentation to us in advance!!

We recognize a shared responsibility to create and maintain this environment for the benefit of all, where everyone feels welcome to participate, speak up, ask questions, and engage in conversation. The expectation is for participants to be intentional and thoughtful in their interactions to ensure the event is a culturally safe environment for all, that is, to ensure someone’s culture is not discussed in ways that are harmful or is described through the lens and experience of another culture. To that end, we expect all participants to abide by the Code of Conduct at all conference venues whether in-person, virtual, on social media, and at all conference related social and extension events.

All reports will be handled in confidence except as otherwise required by law, and subject to due process and natural justice. Organizers will respond as promptly as we can.

Consequences
Participants asked to stop any behavior deemed inappropriate are expected to comply immediately. Explanations of “just joking” are not acceptable; behavior can be harassing without an intent to offend.
