Spring 2022 Update

Spring is in the air and we are pleased to provide you with some important information on upcoming meetings, conferences, and initiatives relevant to the Canadian coastal zone.

NATIONAL ADAPTATION STRATEGY SYMPOSIUM

NRCan is hosting an online meeting on May 16, 2022 from 11:00 to 15:30 (ET) to share information about Canada’s first National Adaptation Strategy and to participate in the launch of public engagement on the Strategy. The event will feature:

  • An opening presentation by the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada;
  • Panels on climate change adaptation opportunities and challenges in Canada with representatives from provincial, territorial, and municipal governments, Indigenous leaders, and Canadian adaptation experts; and,
  • A presentation on the latest climate projections from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Canadian Centre for Climate Services.

MEOPAR – MAY 25-26, 2022: MEOPAR NATIONAL FORUM ON COASTAL COMMUNITY RESILIENCE – INVITATION TO REGISTER
MEOPAR is hosting an online event on May 25-26 that you, or your colleagues, might be interested in attending, called the National Forum on Coastal Community Resilience: Local Government Initiatives. The Forum will explore two themes: Resilience Planning and Partnerships, and Disaster Recovery and Lessons. The Forum sessions run for three hours each day and will feature: community ‘snapshot’ presentations from local government representatives; panel discussions with representatives from federal, provincial, and local government agencies, NGOs, and the research community; as well as breakout room discussions open to all participants. We are also pleased to offer French-English live simultaneous interpretation for the presentation and panel sessions.

COLD REGIONS LIVING SHORELINES COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE REGIONAL KICK-OFF MEETINGS
The CRLS CoP had their regional kick-off meetings this past month, with over 60 participants across North America interested in establishing regional Atlantic, Pacific, Great Lakes and Arctic chapters to develop, support, and steward the effective use of living shoreline ideas and principles, in the context of a changing climate, for application in cold regions. The meetings were a great success, with many volunteers stepping forward to lead the new chapters. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS – JUNE 2022 – CLIMATE-RESILIENT COASTAL NATURE BASED INFRASTRUCTURE WORKSHOP
Together with Saint Mary’s University, TransCoastal Adaptation, the National Research Council of Canada, and the CZCA, we are pleased to announce the Climate-Resilient Coastal Nature-Based Infrastructure Workshop 2022, which will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia (June 29-30). We welcome submissions for oral and poster presentations. Targeted workshop topics include:
1.            Coastal nature-based infrastructure applications, challenges, and successes
2.            Quantifying co-benefits of nature-based solutions
3.            Monitoring of nature-based solutions (planning, methods, and ownership)

COASTAL ZONE CANADA CONFERENCE 2023
